CABINET: FOCUS AFRICA
Ethan Cohen KuBe is pleased to present Cabinet: Focus Africa, a look into an extensive private collection of African Contemporary, African Tribal, and African-American Contemporary Art.
This exhibition's title references Cabinets of Curiosities, the origin point of museum collections, and yet subverts their colonial roots, and brings back into focus art from decentralized artistic communities. The exhibition encourages the viewer to reconsider traditional structures of control, the role of the institution, as well as to question the linearity of art history and trace the "out-of-place artifacts" that are so common to African tribal tradition.
Artists: Gonçalo Mabunda, Moffat Takadiwa, Jeffrey Spencer Hargrave, Aboudia, Adetomiwa Gbadebo, Soly Cissé, Terrence Musekiwa, Vincent Michéa, Wycliffe Mundopa, Bernard Williams, Gresham Tapiwa Nyaude, and Unknown Tribal Artists from 19th and 20th centuries.
