New Chinese Currency: Ink, Landscape and the Body
March 11 - April 16, 2012
Ethan Cohen Fine Arts is pleased to present New Chinese Currency: Ink, Landscape and the Body, curated by Ethan Cohen and Kóan Jeff Baysa. The exhibition features the contemporary work of Huang Yan, Qin Feng, Zhang Dali, Zhang Zhaohui, Bai Yiluo, Da Xiang, and Yu Gan.
This group of Chinese artists reflects the transformation of traditional Chinese art practices, technique, and how innovation has become the new currency of global art markets today. These artists have combined tradition and innovation to create contemporary art that receives universal attention.
New Chinese Currency combines the past with a focus towards transformative ink, landscape and the body. The pieces selected for this exhibition are based in traditional Chinese art practices, however, they reveal individual innovation of each artist.
Traditional Chinese landscape painting arguably began with the turning inward of the scholar-artist from the disintegrating human order. This introspective view grew to reflect the inner feelings of the heart, mind, as well as the culture of the individual.
Today, Huang Yan, Qin Feng, Zhang Dali, Zhang Zhaohui, Bai Yiluo, Da Xiang, and Yu Gan reflect the culture of the individual, the transformative nature of humanity, and this exhibition shows their collective creativity, which can be understood as the new Chinese art currency.
